Black Seabass

The Black Seabass is a fairly small fish of just 8-24 inches and weighing about 1-5 pounds. These fish have large fins and a large mouth with an extending spine at the top of their tailfin. They are black with a tinge of blue and usually have large light verticle stripes on their back. This species is sometimes referred to as the Blackfish, but that term is also, more commonly, used for the Tautog, and should probably be limited to the Tautog to avoid confusion. Black seabass are found in the ocean, slightly deeper on rocky bottoms and around other structures like wrecks and jetties, where they feed on shellfish and other small fish. They come inshore in the summer and prefer cool, deep water and are found in deeper holes in the backbays as well as in coastal waters. These are not schooling fish but will appear in large numbers in attractive areas.
